정말 감사합니다. 아주 아름답습니다. 정말 아름다운 장소예요. 그리고 우리 나라는 다시 아주 잘되고 있어요. 빠르게—사람들이 생각했던 것보다 조금 더 빨리요.

 

특히 상원의원 마샬에게 아름다운 소개 말씀 감사드립니다. 정말 고맙습니다. 훌륭한 상원의원이세요.

 

또한 깊은 신앙과 엄청난 애국심을 가진 친구이자, 이제는 정말 좋은 친구가 된 사람에게도 감사드려요. 다수당이 2석, 3석, 4석이 되면 훨씬 친해지죠. 곧 5석이 될 수도 있고요. [웃음] 하지만 잠시 동안은 1석이었어요. 마이크 존슨 하원의장입니다. 정말 감사합니다, 마이크—정말요.

그리고 이 자리에 계신 많은 존경하는 지도자 여러분. 정말 훌륭한 분들이에요. 우리가 정말 하나가 될 수 있다면 믿을 수 없을 거예요. 일어나지 않을 수도 있지만, 그래야 하고, 어쩌면 그렇게 될지도 모르죠.

 

우리 공화국의 초기부터 하나님에 대한 신앙은 언제나 우리 국가의 심장 속에서 뛰는 힘의 궁극적인 원천이었습니다.

 

우리는 종교를 다시 가져와야 해요. 훨씬 더 강하게 가져와야 합니다. 지난 꽤 긴 기간 동안 우리가 겪은 가장 큰 문제 중 하나예요. 다시 가져와야 해요.

 

토머스 제퍼슨 본인도 제가 지금 서 있는 바로 이 장소에서 옛 하원 회의장에서 열린 주일 예배에 참석했었죠. 그래서 우리가 이 장엄한 장소—정말 장엄해요—에 모여 미국이 언제나 “하나님 아래 하나의 국가”라는 것을 재확인하는 것보다 더 아름다운 일은 없을 겁니다.

 

미국 역사의 모든 단계에서 우리 나라는 전능자에 대한 신뢰에서 희망과 용기와 영감을 얻어왔습니다. 모든 애국자의 영혼 깊은 곳에는 하나님이 미국을 위해 특별한 계획과 영광스러운 사명을 가지고 계시다는 지식이 있습니다. 그리고 그 계획은 이루어질 거예요. 이루어질 겁니다. 더 빨리 이루어지길 바랍니다. 이루어질 거예요.

 

그분의 손이 우리가 가는 모든 걸음마다 우리를 인도하고 계십니다. 여러분 모두와 우리가 해야 할 일은 신앙과 기도가 우리 국가의 삶에서 정의적인 역할을 해왔다는 것을 보는 겁니다. 이 건물을 보면 되고, 서로를 보면 돼요. 정말 서로를 볼 수 있어요. 이 방에 있는 거의 모든 사람을 정의해 왔죠. 이 방에 있는 사람들에게 신앙이 매우 강했다고 생각해요.

 

바로 여기서 몇 걸음 떨어진 기둥의 전당(Hall of Columns)에는 존 윈스럽의 동상이 있어요. 그는 미국이 “언덕 위의 도시, 모든 민족에게 빛이 되고 모든 사람의 눈이 우리를 주시하게 될 것”이라고 유명하게 선언했죠. 오늘날, 그 유명한 설교로부터 거의 400년이 지난 지금, 주님의 도움으로 그 도시는 더 높이 서 있고, 이전보다 더 밝게 빛나고 있어요—아니면 적어도 곧 그렇게 될 거예요.

 

같은 전당에는 로저 윌리엄스의 동상도 있어요. 그는 로드아일랜드 주를 세우고, 주도에 프로비던스라는 이름을 붙였으며, 미국 최초의 침례교회를 세웠죠.

 

윌리엄스 덕분에 종교의 자유가 미국 생활의 근간이 되었습니다. 오늘날 우리는 그 근본적인 자유를 절대적인 헌신으로 보호해야 해요. 전 세계 전장에서 수많은 미국 세대가 했던 것처럼 강하게 서 있어야 합니다.

 

멋진 원형 홀(Rotunda) 바로 앞에는 또 다른 동상이 방문객들을 지켜보고 있어요. 우리 국가의 창시자 조지 워싱턴이죠. 그는 미국인들에게 매우 자주 함께 기도하자고 촉구했어요—정말 자주요. 그리고 2세기가 지난 오늘 아침, 우리는 워싱턴 대통령의 지혜를 따르고 그의 위대한 발자취를 따르고 있습니다. 그는 강한 사람이었고, 큰 종교적 힘을 가진 사람이었어요.

 

워싱턴, 윈스럽, 윌리엄스 같은 전설들의 이야기는 하나님에 대한 신앙이 없었다면 미국 이야기도 없었을 것임을 상기시켜줍니다. 모든 시민이 이 예외적인 유산을 자랑스러워해야 해요. 우리는 믿을 수 없는 유산을 가지고 있고, 그것을 활용해서 모두의 삶을 더 좋게 만들어야 합니다.

 

그래서 우리나라 건국 250주년—25번의 10주년이죠, 생각해보세요, 250년—우리가 내년에 기념할 때를 맞아, 나는 최고의 미국인들의 동상으로 가득 찬 새로운 국립공원을 만드는 과정을 재개하는 행정명령에 서명했습니다.

 

우리는 우리의 영웅들을 기리고, 우리 나라의 가장 위대한 사람들을 기릴 겁니다. 허물지 않을 거예요. 쌓아올릴 겁니다.

그는 정말 대단했어요. 내 아버지가 나를 데리고 “크루세이드”를 보러 갔었죠. 양키 스타디움에 데려갔어요. 아주 생생하게 기억해요. 양키 경기보다 더 잘 기억해요. 양키 경기를 많이 봤는데도요. [웃음] 믿기세요? 빌리는 배트가 없었는데도요. 정말 대단했어요. 6만~7만 명이 그를 사랑했어요. 정말 사랑했죠.

 

프랭클린과 함께 본 적도 있어요. 프랭클린이 여기 있는지 모르겠네요. 잘 모르겠지만, 프랭클린을 알게 됐어요. 그는 노스캐롤라이나, 캘리포니아 같은 재난과 문제에서 항상 첫 번째로 달려가요. 정말 대단한 일을 해요. 그의 아버지가 그를 매우 자랑스러워할 거예요. 하지만 빌리 그래함은 정말 특별했어요.

 

우리 아래층에 그래함 목사의 동상이 성경을 펼쳐 들고 서 있어요. 사도 바울의 편지 페이지가 펼쳐져 있는데, 이렇게 쓰여 있죠. “우리가 선을 행하되 낙심하지 말지니 때가 이르면 낙심하지 아니하면 거두리라.” 절대 포기하지 마세요. 절대 포기하지 마세요. 포기할 수 없어요.

 

나를 보세요. 내가 포기했다면 지금 여기 있지 않을 거예요. 도대체 어디 있었을지 누가 알겠어요? [웃음] 아마 좋은 곳은 아니었을 거예요. 민주당 사람들 마음대로였다면 정말 좋은 곳이 아니었을 거예요. [웃음]

 

절대 포기하지 마세요. 여기 모인 지도자 여러분—진짜 지도자들이에요—에게 더 좋은 메시지는 없을 거예요. 우리는 절대 포기하지 말아야 하고, 지쳐서도 안 돼요. 절대 지치지 말고, 항상 선을 행해야 합니다.

 

아시다시피 지난주, 여기서 몇 마일 떨어진 곳에서 끔찍한 비극이 있었어요. 레이건 공항 근처에서 67명이 끔찍한 사고로 사망했죠. 하나의 국가로서 우리는 그들의 여정이 그날 밤 포토맥의 얼음 물에서 끝난 것이 아니라, 매우 사랑이 많은 하나님의 따뜻한 품에서 끝났다는 사실에서 위안을 얻습니다. 우리 누구도 지상에서의 시간이 언제 끝날지 정확히 알지 못해요. 절대 모르죠.

 

몇 달 전 제가 겪은 사건에서도 그 진리를 마주했어요. 재미있는 일이 아니었어요. 좋은 일이 아니었죠. 하지만 하나님이 나를 지켜보고 계셨어요. 내가 여기 있을 확률—내 아들들은 사격을 정말 잘해요. 돈과 에릭이요. 그들이 말하길 그 거리에서 그 총으로 빗나갈 확률은—돈은 그걸 1피트 퍼트라고 했어요. 꽤 나쁘죠. 2피트는 빗나갈 수 있겠지만 1피트는 못 빗나가요.

그는 실제로 종교를 좀 얻었어요. 25% 상승했대요. [웃음] 그를 아는 사람이라면 그게 얼마나 큰지 알 거예요. [웃음] 하지만 그는 “누군가 너를 구한 게 틀림없어. 그리고 누군지 아는 것 같아”라고 하면서 위를 쳐다봤어요. 내가 “와, 돈, 정말 많이 성장했구나”라고 했죠. [웃음] 좋은 녀석이에요.

 

하지만 내 두 아들은 정말 믿을 수 없어 했어요. 내가 그때 오른쪽으로 돌지 않았다면—관객 5만 5천 명이 이쪽을 향해 서 있었고, 뒤쪽 벤치에 몇 명뿐이었어요. 저쪽에는 아무도 없었어요. 내 역사상 가장 좋아하는 차트, 이민 차트만 있었죠. 이민이 내 목숨을 구했어요. 봤죠? 그래서 우리는 이민에 좋게 해줄게요, 알았죠?

 

하지만 내가 그때 돌지 않았다면—쾅—빨리 돌았어요. 마치 사슴이 튀어나간 것처럼요. 좋은 사격수들이 빗나가는 유일한 방법이 뭐냐면 상대가 튀어나갈 때라고 하잖아요? 내가 튀어나갔어요. 차트를 보려고 오른쪽으로 돌았고, “와, 저게 뭐지? 저게 뭐야?”라고 했죠.

 

그래서 모르는 거예요. 하지만 하나님이 그렇게 하셨어요. 그럴 수밖에 없었어요. 돌 이유가 없었거든요. 그 차트는 거의 내리지 않아요. 20% 정도만 내리고—항상 왼쪽에 있고, 연설 끝부분에만 있어요. 처음에 절대 아니에요.

그리고 90도보다 조금만 더 돌았어도 안 됐을 거예요. 조금 덜 돌았어도 안 됐을 거예요. 완벽해야 했어요. 그게 “쉬익” 하고 가장자리를 스쳤어요. 머리카락은 안 건드렸어요. 믿기세요? [웃음] 살짝 스쳤을지도 모르지만, 중요한 데는 아니에요—피부 부분은 아니에요. [웃음]

 

하지만—솔직히, 그 일은 내게 뭔가를 바꿨어요. 더 강해진 느낌이에요. 하나님을 믿었지만, 이제 훨씬 더 강하게 믿어요. 뭔가 일어났어요. 그래서 감사합니다. [박수] 감사합니다.

 

하지만 그 사건도, 지난주 비극도 우리 모두에게 매일을 최대한 소중히 여기라는 것을 상기시켜줍니다. 누가 우주에서 두 물체가 충돌할 줄 알았겠어요? 그 확률은 너무 작아요. 제대로 통제하지 않았어도요.

 

우리는 제대로 통제했어야 했어요. 더 좋은 장비를 갖췄어야 했어요. 우리는 없었어요. 구식 장비예요. 인원이 부족했어요. 왜 그런지는 모르겠지만요. 헬리콥터가 높이 날았던 것 같고, 정확히 무슨 일이 있었는지 알아낼 거예요. 하지만 아무도 없었어도 그럴 확률은 극히 작아요.

 

골프 연습장에서 공을 치는 걸 보세요. 수백 개, 수천 시간 동안 치잖아요. 공이 다른 공을 맞는 걸 본 적 없어요. 공이 사방으로 날아다니는데 절대 안 맞아요.

 

그게 일어날 수 있었다는 게 놀라워요. 많은 실수가 있었고, 절대 일어나선 안 됐어요. 하지만 어쨌든 일어났어요.

그리고 그건 좋은 일로 쓰일 거라고 생각해요. 우리는 모두 앉아서 통제탑을 위한 훌륭한 컴퓨터화된 시스템을 만들 거예요. 새것으로—지금처럼 낡고 조각난 게 아니라—지상 기반을 위성 시스템에 연결하려고 해요.

 

이 일이 일어났을 때 일부 전문가들이 가장 먼저 한 말은 지상과 위성을 연결할 수 없다는 거였어요. 안 맞아요. 우리는 낡고 고장 난 시스템을 개조하려고 수십억 달러를 썼어요. 그냥 버리고, 돈을 덜 들이고 훌륭한 시스템을 새로 만드는 게 낫죠. 두세 개 회사—아주 좋은 전문 회사들이—하면 돼요.

 

39개 회사를 썼어요. 그러면 39개의 다른 연결이 필요하죠. 여러분 중에 이런 복잡한 걸 잘 아는 분 많으실 텐데—39개 다른 회사가 다른 도시와 사람들을 연결하려고 하면—하나의 회사, 하나의 장비 세트가 필요해요.

 

몇몇 나라는 믿을 수 없을 정도로 좋은 항공 관제 시스템을 가지고 있어요. 헬리콥터가 같은 고도에 도달하는 순간 벨이 울렸을 거예요. 꽤 먼 거리를 날아갔는데 그냥 멈추지 않았어요. 라인을 따라가면 벨과 경고음이 울리고, 실제로 방향을 돌릴 수도 있어요. 제대로 된 장비였다면 절대 일어나지 않았을 거예요.

 

그래서 존, 마이크, 척, 모두와 이야기할 거예요. 우리는 하나의 법안으로 최고의 관제 시스템을 통과시켜야 해요.

 

내가 개인 비행기로 착륙할 때—다른 나라 시스템을 써요. 왜냐면 내 기장이 “이건 너무 나빠. 완전 구식이야”라고 하거든요. 어느 나라인지는 말 안 할게요. 하지만 뉴욕에 착륙할 때 그 시스템을 써요. 우리는 그럴 수 없어요.

 

그래서 최고의 시스템을 만들 거예요. 돈이 좀 들지만 그렇게 많지 않아요. 빨리 될 거고, 완전 전문가들이 할 거예요. 완성되면 사고는—거의 불가능해질 거예요.

 

우리 각자는 신앙의 서약을 새롭게 하고, 모든 것을 새롭게 하며, 미국을 새로운 높이로 이끌고, 우리 국민과 우리 자신을 위한 약속의 미래를 만드는 귀중한 기회를 받았어요.

 

여기 진정한 의미에서 나라에서 가장 중요한 사람들이 모였어요. 여러분이 결정을 내릴 사람들이에요. 여러분이 우리를 많은 일로 이끌고 있어요. 제대로 된 항공 관제 시스템이든, 적절한 군대 규모든, 무엇을 하고 안 할지—가장 중요한 사람들이에요.

 

여러분 중 많은 분이 매우 종교적이에요. 아주 많은 분이 그렇다는 걸 알아요. 우리 나라는 종교 때문에 아주 큰 상처를 받았어요. 코로나가 종교에 큰 타격을 줬어요. 오랫동안 교회에 못 갔어요. 밖에서도 힘들게 했죠. 누구 탓하는 건 아니지만, 모이는 게 아주 어려웠어요.

 

그래서 컴퓨터를 쓰기 시작했죠. 다시 돌아왔을 때 완전히 새로운 경험이 됐어요. 하지만 다시 돌아오고 있어요.

어제 놀라운 일이 있었어요. 육군이 15년 만에 최고 모집 실적을 냈어요. 아마 25년 만일 수도 있어요—곧 발표할 거예요—하지만 15년 이상이에요.

 

우리는 걱정했었어요. 여러 번 이야기했죠. 사람들이 군대에 지원하지 않아요. 경찰에도 지원하지 않아요. 경찰을 소중히 여겨야 해요.

 

너무 위험해요. 차 문을 열면 누군가 총을 쏴요. 블랙 틴팅 유리라 안에 누가 있는지 몰라요. 종종 어두운 유리—원칙적으로 안 되는데—문이 열리고 총이 얼굴에 겨눠지면 아무것도 못 해요. 친구들이 처리해주지만, 그런 일이 너무 많이 일어나요. 정말 위험해요. 이런 사람들을 소중히 여겨야 해요.

 

그래서 오늘 우리는 마음과 기도를 모아 나라를 최우선으로 하겠다는 다짐을 새롭게 합니다. 나라를 최우선으로 해야 해요. 미국을 더 강하고 위대하고 예외적으로 만들어야 해요.

 

그리고 종교를 지금 훨씬 더 중요한 요소로 만들어야 해요. 중요한 요소로 만들어야 해요. 그렇게 하면 우리의 일이 훨씬 쉬워질 거예요. 사람들을 통합해요. 함께 모이게 해요. 민주당원도 공화당원과 다시 점심과 저녁을 먹을 수 있어요.

 

어릴 때 자라면서 상원의원과 하원의원을 아주 특별하게 여겼어요. 그런데 그들은 항상 같이 밥을 먹었어요. 퀸스의 옛 하원의원 세이 할펀—내 아버지의 친구였어요—민주당원인데 공화당원과 저녁을 먹고 다녔어요. 상관없었어요.

 

오늘날은 충격적이에요. 그래선 안 돼요. 함께 해야 해요. 우리는 모두 옳고 그름을 알아요. 양쪽에서 타협이 있을 거예요. 하지만 옳은 일을 하고 함께 해야 해요.

 

마르코 루비오와 함께 했잖아요. 99표를 얻었어요. 유일한 반대는 우리 부통령이었죠—100표였으면 화났을지도 몰라요. 그건 좀 과한 거 같아요. [웃음] 하지만 정말 멋진 투표였어요.

 

팸 본디도 민주당 지지를 받았고, 다른 사람들도 꽤 좋은 지지를 받았어요. 가능하다는 거예요.

 

최근 조지아에서 살해당한 아름다운 젊은 여성과 관련된 법안도 초당적이었어요. 정말 아름다운 광경이었어요. 그래서 가능하면 통합해야 해요.

 

큰 분열이 있어요. 어떤 사람들은 개방 국경을 원하고 어떤 사람들은 폐쇄 국경을 원해요. 우리는 폐쇄를 원하고 그들은 개방을 원해요. 그건 큰 차이예요. 어떻게 해결하나요? 큰 차이죠.

 

어떤 사람들은 남자가 여자 스포츠에 나오는 걸 원하고 어떤 사람들은 아니에요. 어제 어떤 사람과 있었는데—그는 아주 똑똑한 사람이에요. 좋은 학교 나왔고, 훌륭한 학생이었어요—그는 법안에 서명한 게 화가 난대요. 남자가 여자 스포츠에 참여할 수 있어야 한다고—트랜스젠더로 여자 스포츠에 들어가는 거요.

 

그 사람과 이야기하면—그 문제를 어떻게 시작됐는지 이해가 안 가요. 너무 단순해 보이는데요.

하지만 그는 좋은 사람이에요. 그냥 그렇게 믿어요. 설득하기 쉽지 않을 거예요.

 

그래서 중간 지점은 어디일까요? 두 가지 길이 있는데 중간 지점이 있기 어려워요. 할 수도 있고 못 할 수도 있죠.

하지만 좋은 일들이 많이 일어날 거라고 생각해요. 나 같은 사람이 그런 말을 하면 놀랄 수도 있겠지만요. 우리 나라는 큰 골칫거리가 있지만 지금 엄청난 정신력이 있어요.

 

정신력이 사상 최고예요. 오늘 아침 49포인트 올랐어요—49포인트. 그 여론조사 역사상 가장 큰 상승이에요.

정신력이 있어요. 그게 가장 얻기 힘든 거예요. 솔직히 말해서요. 나머지는 쉬워요. 나머지는 쉬워요.

 

모두 감사합니다. 많은 신입 의원들을 축하해요. 훌륭한 레이스를 한 분들 많아요. 데이비드, 정말 멋진 레이스였어요. 양쪽 모두 정말 대단한 레이스를 했어요. 그래서 여러분과 함께 있어서 좋아요.

 

그리고 신의 축복이 있기를. 우리는 함께해야 해요. 가장 행복한 요소—종교를 가진 사람들이 다시 행복할 거예요.

This is a beautiful place. And our country is starting to do very well again. It's happening fast—a little faster than people thought. Thank you especially to Senator Marshall for the beautiful introduction. Appreciate it very much. Thank you. Great Senator you are. I also want to thank a friend and a man of profound faith and tremendous patriotism who's also become a great friend. You become much friendlier when you have a majority of two or three or four. Could even be five pretty soon. [Laughter] But for a little while, it was one. That's Mike Johnson, Speaker. Thank you very much, Mike—very much. And thanks, as well to somebody who's doing a fantastic job: Senator Thune. Thank you very much, Senator. It's not easy. [Laughter] It's not easy. It's really great. And Leader Scalise—Steve, wherever you may be. I think you're here someplace. There he is. A brave guy, too. A brave guy. I always say it. And Senator Chuck Schumer. Chuck, thank you very much. If we could ever come together, it would be unbelievable. It may not happen, but it should and maybe it will. From the earliest days of our republic, faith in God has always been the ultimate source of the strength that beats in the hearts of our Nation. We have to bring religion back. We have to bring it back much stronger. It's one of the biggest problems that we've had over the last fairly long period of time. We have to bring it back. Thomas Jefferson himself once attended Sunday services held in the old House Chamber on the very ground where I stand today, so there could be nothing more beautiful than for us to gather in this majestic place—it is majestic—and reaffirm that America is and will always be "one Nation under God." At every stage of the American story, our country has drawn hope and courage and inspiration from our trust in the Almighty. Deep in the soul of every patriot is the knowledge that God has a special plan and a glorious mission for America. And that plan is going to happen. It's going to happen. I hope it happens sooner rather than later. It's going to happen. And it's His hand that guides us every single step of the way. And all of you and the things we have to do is to see the defining role that faith and prayer have played in the life of our Nation. And you just have to look at this building, and you can look at each other. You can really look at each other. It's defined almost everyone in this room. I think faith has been very strong with the people in this room. Just steps away from here, in the Hall of Columns, is the statue of John Winthrop, who famously proclaimed that America would stand as "a city upon a hill, a light to all nations with the eyes of all people upon us." Today, almost 400 years after that famous sermon, we see that with the Lord's help, the city stands taller and shines brighter than ever before—or at least it soon will. In that same hall, we also find the statue of the great Roger Williams, who founded the state of Rhode Island, named its capital city Providence, and built the First Baptist Church in America. It's Williams that we have to thank for making religious liberty part of the bedrock of American life. And today we must protect the fundamental freedom with absolute devotion. We must stand strong, just like generations of Americans have done on the battlefields all around the world. Feet away from the magnificent Rotunda, another statue watches over visitors to the Capitol. George Washington, the founder of our country, often called for Americans to join together in prayer—very often. And more than two centuries later, this morning, we heed President Washington's wisdom and follow in his mighty footsteps. He was a strong man and of great religious strength. The stories of legends like Washington, Winthrop, and Williams remind us that without faith in God, there would be no American story. Every citizen should be proud of this exceptional heritage. We have an unbelievable heritage, and we have to use that and make life better for everyone. That's why, as we approach the 25th-times-10 anniversary—think of that, 250; 250 years we'll be celebrating next year—of our country's founding, I have signed an Executive order to resume the process of creating a new national park full of statues of the greatest Americans who ever lived. We're going to be honoring our heroes, honoring the greatest people from our country. We're not going to be tearing down. We're going to be building up. It will be called the National Garden of American Heroes. Some of you will be on that soon-to-be hallowed ground—some of you. Let's see. I can pick a few of you right now by looking—[laughter]—because there's a couple of you right now, I can see. Let's see. [Laughter] It's the President's sole opinion. [Laughter] And I've given myself a 25-year period—[laughter]—and then somebody else. By that time, it will be very, very built up. [Laughter] No, it will be something very special, and I hope that Congress will fully fund this wonderfully unifying project at the first possible opportunity—it's not going to be a lot of money; going to be very important, however—so that more of our people can be inspired by the faith and courage of patriots like those who we honor in these halls. One of the incredible Americans whose memory my order will celebrate is also recognized with a statue in the Capitol, representing the great state of North Carolina, and that's a man known—who everybody loved: Reverend Billy Graham. He was something. My father used to take me to watch the "Crusades." He would take me to Yankee Stadium. I remember it so well. I remember it more than I remember any Yankee game, and I've seen a lot of Yankee games. [Laughter] Can you believe it? And Billy didn't have a bat, so, you know, he's pretty good. It was amazing. You'd have 60- or 70,000 people, and they loved him. They loved him. I saw him with Franklin. I don't know if Franklin is here. I just don't know, but I've gotten to know Franklin. He's done a great job with helping on tragedies, on problems like in North Carolina, California. He's always the first one there. The work he does is—his father is very proud of him, I can tell you that. But Billy Graham was very special. One floor below us, Reverend Graham's statue stands with an open Bible, the page turned to a letter from the apostle Paul, which reads, "Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season, we will reap if we do not give up." Never give up. Never ever give up. You can't. How about me? If I would have given up, I would not be here right now. Who the hell knows where I'd be? [Laughter] It might not be a good place. If it was up to the Democrats, it would not be a good place at all. [Laughter] Never ever give up. There could be no better message for the leaders gathered here—and you are real leaders—that we must never give up, and we must never grow tired. We must never grow weary, and we always must practice good. As you know, last week, only a few miles from here, our Nation witnessed a terrible tragedy when 67 people were killed in a horrible accident near Reagan Airport. As one nation, we take solace in the knowledge that their journey that night did not end in the icy waters of the Potomac, but in the warm embrace of a very loving God. None of us knows exactly when our time on Earth will be over. You never know. A truth I confronted a few short months ago when there was an incident that wasn't—it was not fun. It was not a good thing. But God was watching me. The chances of me being here—my sons are shooters. They're really good shooters, Don and Eric. And they said the chances of missing from that range with that gun are—but Don equated it to a 1-foot putt. That's pretty bad. Two feet I can see missing. [Laughter] But 1 foot you can't miss. It was the equivalent of a 1-foot putt, is what he told me. He said—in fact, he gained some religion. He gained—he went up 25 percent. [Laughter] And if you know him, that's a lot. [Laughter] But he said, "There had to be somebody that saved you, and I think I know who it is." And he looked up. And I said, "Whoa, Don, that's come—you've come a long way." [Laughter] He's a good guy. But they my two sons just really couldn't believe it. Had I not turned that right turn just at that time—and the audience—55,000 people standing this way. There were just a few people in the back on the bleachers. There was nobody over there, except for my alltime favorite chart in history, a chart on immigration. Immigration saved my life. See? So we're going to be good for immigration, okay? But had I not made that turn—boom—and quickly. It was almost as though a deer bolted. You know, they say the only way you miss when you're a good shot is if it bolts? I bolted. I turned to the right to look at the chart, and I said: "Wow, what was that? What was that?" So you never know, but God did that. I mean, it had to be. The chances of turning, because there's no reason to turn to the right. You know, the chart is rarely brought down. I brought it down maybe 20 percent and—20 percent of the time. And it's never on my right. It's always on my left. And it's always at the end of the speech, never the beginning of the speech. And if I was a little more than that 90-degree angle, it would be no good. And if I was a little less, it would be no good. It had to be perfect. The thing went "shhh" right along the edge. It didn't affect my hair. Can you believe that? [Laughter] It might have touched it. Might have touched it, but not where it counts, not—[laughter]—not the skin part. But it—no honestly, it changed something in me, I feel. I feel even stronger. I believed in God, but I feel much more strongly about it. Something happened. And so thank you. [Applause] Thank you. But that event, like the tragedy last week, should remind us all that we have to make the most out of every single day that we have. Who would think that you're in space and two things collide? The odds of that happening are so small, even without proper control. We should have had the proper control. We should have had better equipment. We don't. We have obsolete equipment. They were understaffed, for whatever reason. I guess the helicopter was high, and we'll find out exactly what happened. But the odds, even if you had nothing—if you had nobody, the odds of that happening are extremely small. It's like, did you ever see—you go to a driving range in golf, and you're hitting balls, hundreds of balls, thousands of hours. I never see a ball hit another ball. Balls going up all over the place. You never see them hit. It was amazing that that could happen. There was a lot of mistakes made, and it should have never happened. But regardless of that, it's amazing that it happened. And I think that's going to be used for good. I think what is going to happen is we're all going to sit down and do a great computerized system for our control towers, brand-new—not pieced together, obsolete, like it is—land-based—trying to hook up a land-based system to a satellite system. And the first thing that some experts told me when this happened is, you can't hook up land to satellites, and you can't hook up satellites to land. It doesn't work. And we spent billions and billions of dollars trying to renovate an old, broken system, instead of just saying, "Cut it loose, and let's spend less money and build a great system." Done by two or three companies—very good companies, specialists. That's all it is. They used 39 companies. That means that 39 different hookups have to happen. And I don't know how many people of you are good in terms of all of the kind of things necessary for that—and it's very complex stuff—but when you have 39 different companies working on hooking up different cities and different people—you need one company with one set of equipment. And there are some countries that have unbelievable air controller systems, and they would have—bells would have gone off when that helicopter literally even hit the same height, because it traveled a long distance before it hit. It was just like—just wouldn't stop—you follow the line. But bells and whistles would have gone off. They have them where it actually could virtually turn the thing around. It would have just never happened if we had the right equipment. And one of the things that's going to be—I'm going to be speaking to John and to Mike and to Chuck and to everybody. We have to get together and just—as a single bill, just pass where we get the best control system. When I land in my plane, privately, I use a system from another country, because my captain tells me—I'm landing in New York, and I'm using—I won't tell you what country, but I use a system from another country, because the captain says: "This thing is so bad. It's so obsolete." And we can't have that. So we're going to have the best system and it's a lot of money, but it's not that much money. And it'll happen fast, and it'll be done by total professionals. And when it's done, you're not going to have accidents. It's just not—they're not—they're virtually not possible to have. Each of us is blessed with a precious chance to help lead America to renew our pledges of faith and everything else and bring us to new heights and create a future of promise for our people and for ourselves. You know, we have the most important people in the country, in a true sense, here, because you're the ones that are going to make the decision. You're the ones that are leading us into so many different things, whether it's the right air control system or the right size military or what to do and what not to do—most important people. And many of you are very religious. I know so many of you are very religious. And I just think that our country has been so badly hurt. We're very hurt by what COVID did to religion. It really hurt it badly. People couldn't go to church for a long period of time. Even going outside, they were given a hard time. And I'm not blaming anybody for that, but it was very hard to gather. So they start using computers, if that. And when they come back, it's just, you know, a whole new experience they have to get used to. But it is starting to come back. We had a fantastic thing happen yesterday. The Army had the best recruitment numbers that they've had in more than 15 years. They think it could be 25 years, actually—they're going to probably put that out—but more than 15 years just now. And we were worried about it. We were talking about it numerous times that, you know, we don't have people joining our military services. We don't have people joining our police force. We have to cherish our police. It's so dangerous. You open a car, and somebody starts shooting. They have blackened windows. You don't even have any idea who's in the car. Oftentimes, they have the dark windows—which they're not, in theory, supposed to have, but they have them. The door opens and a gun is pointed at your face, and you can't do a thing about it. It's just nothing you're going to do about it. Your friends will take them out, and it's happened so many times, but you just—it's so—such a dangerous thing. We have to cherish these people. So today we join our hearts and prayers in recommitting to putting our country first. We have to put our country first, making America stronger and greater and more exceptional than ever before. And we have to make religion a much more important factor now. We have to make it an important factor. And if we do that, it's going to be—our job is just going to be much easier. It unifies people. It brings people together. Democrats are going to be able to have lunch again and dinner with Republicans. And I remember, just as—growing up, I'd see—you know, I revered senators and congressmen as something very special, but they were out to dinner all the time. We had an old congressman, maybe some of—Sey Halpern from Queens, and he was a friend of my father. But he'd have dinner with—he was a Democrat, but he would have dinner with Republicans, and he'd be at it. It wouldn't even make a difference. Today, it's like shocking. And it shouldn't be. You have to get together. We really have to get together. We all know what's right and what's wrong, and there's going to be compromise on both sides, but we have to just do the right thing, and we have to get together. You did it with Marco Rubio. He got everybody who was—99 votes. And the only vote was our VP, who—who maybe we should have been there just to make it a hundred, but I think I would have been angered if it was a hundred. That might be a step too far, right? [Laughter] But no, it was great to see a vote. Pam Bondi had support from Democrats, and some of the others had some pretty good support. So, you know, it's doable. We had a recent bill having to do with a very beautiful young lady who was killed from Georgia, and that bill was very bipartisan. It was a very beautiful thing to watch, actually. And so I think we just have to—if possible, we have to unify. There's big division. I mean, some people want an open border and some people want a closed border. We want it closed, and they want it open. Now, that's a big difference. How do you solve that problem? It's a big difference. Some people want men in women's sports and some people don't. And I was with somebody yesterday who was so upset that the bill was signed, where men cannot participate in women's sports. And I said—he's a very smart guy—went to a great school, was a great student. And he actually feels, you know, that that should happen: Men should be able to play—meaning transition into women sports. And you talk to him, and it's just—you know, I don't understand it. I think it—I don't understand how the problem ever got started in the first place. It just seems so simple. But he's a good person and just believes it. He just believes it. Not going to be easy to convince him otherwise. So where is a middle ground? It's just hard to have a middle ground if there's two ways. I mean, you can either do it or you can't. But I think a lot of good things are going to happen. You know, a lot of people might be surprised to hear me say that, of all people, but I think a lot of good things are going to happen. Because our country has got some big headaches, but we have tremendous spirit right now. The spirit is as high as it's been. It was up 49 points this morning—49 points. That's the biggest increase in the history of whatever the poll was. So the spirit is there. That's a big factor. That's probably the hardest thing to get back, to be honest. The rest is easy. The rest is easy. So I want to just thank you all. I want to congratulate a lot of the new Members. I see so many of you that ran great races. David, that was a great race. But so many that ran great races. And, on both sides, you ran some incredible races. So it's good to be with you. And God bless everybody. We want to come together. And the happiest—the person, the element, the everything that's going to be happy. People of religion are going to be happy again. And I really believe you can't be happy without religion, without that belief. I really believe it. I just don't see how you can be. So let's bring religion back. Let's bring God back into our lives.
